Your Oceanside Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Surgery

Having a well-toned, flat abdomen is a goal that many patients desire.  However, despite exercising and dieting, this goal may not be able to be accomplished.  Even individuals who are at a normal weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging.  The most common causes of this problem includes heredity, pregnancies, prior surgery, and significant weight changes. If you desire a well-tone, flat abdomen then a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can help you achieve this goal.

What is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a commonly used term for the surgical procedure that corrects a protruding or loose, sagging abdomen. The areas that can be treated include the center of the abdomen and may extend to the entire region between the rib cage and the pubic bone.  It can also treat the sides and back region. Improving the contour of the abdomen can be performed using a variety of techniques.  When excess fat is the cause, improvements may be performed using only liposuction.  When excess fat is combined with loose, sagging skin, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can remove the unwanted fat and excess skin. If the abdominal muscles are weakened or separated, a condition called diastasis, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can also correct this problem.

        Ideal Candidate for Tummy (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is not a substitute for weight loss or an exercise program.  Your results can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight.  For this reason, patients who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies may advised to postpone their tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is best performed on adults of any age who are in good health, are close to their ideal weight for their body type and size, are moderately fit and, overall, have good muscle tone.  Patients should also be non-smokers and have a positive outlook and specific goals in mind.  Previous abdominal surgery may limit the potential results of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). For women who have undergone a cesarean section, the existing scar may often be removed or revised for a new incision.

What is Involved in the Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Consultation?

Scheduling a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) consultation is the first step in the process.  A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) consultation is designed to fully educate you about tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) in a comfortable environment.  The consultation will include a discussion of your goals and an evaluation of your individual case.  A physical examination of your abdominal contour will be performed.  There will also be a discussion of your likely outcome of your tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the risk and complications of tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and course of surgical treatment.  The success and safety of your tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) requires that you fully disclose your health history, current medications, the use of vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.

How do I Prepare for Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Surgery?

After your tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) consultation and deciding to have your surgery, you will be scheduled for a pre-operative appointment. During your pre-operative appointment, you will be given prescriptions for the medications you will need after the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery.   You may need to have some basic diagnostic tests and lab work to ensure that you are fit for tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery.  You will be instructed on medications and vitamins to avoid, like asprin, before your surgery.  It is important that you maintain a healthy diet before and after your surgery.  The risks and possible complications will be explained to you, and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) informed consent will be signed by you.  It is important that you address all your questions directly with your plastic surgeon.  It is natural to feel some anxiety, whether excitement for the anticipated tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) outcomes or pre-operative stress.

Where is the Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Surgery Performed?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) may be performed in your plastic surgeon's accredited office-based surgical facility, an ambulatory surgical facility or a hospital, possibly with an overnight stay.  It is more commonly performed under general anesthesia, although local anesthesia with sedation may be also used.  Theses decisions will be based on the requirements of your specific tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and considerations of patient and surgeon preference.

How do I Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon to Perform My Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

Choosing to have a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a very important decision; so is selecting a plastic surgeon.  The most important consideration is BOARD CERTIFICATION by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.  Not all physicians who perform plastic surgery or who use the title plastic surgeon are board certified in plastic surgery.  The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board where plastic surgeons have completed extensive surgical training and rigorous examinations in plastic surgery which qualifies them to perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the face and body.

How are Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Performed?

Oceanside Tummy Tuck Abominoplasty Pre-Op

On the day of your tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery, markings will be made on the abdomen.  The marking reflect the excess skin and fat to be removed. It can be marked according to the undergarments or swim wear that you like to wear.

Oceanside Tummy Tuck Abominoplasty Skin

During tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery, an incision will be made on the lower waist line.  The belly button will be isolated and left on its stalk.  The skin and fat will be lifted up to the level of the lower rib cage.

Oceanside Tummy Tuck Abdominoplasy Muscle Repair

The abdominal muscles will be examined during the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). If there is any weakness in the abdomen or if there is a diastasis of the abdominal muscles, the abdominal muscles will then be repaired. This will strengthen the muscle and flatten the abdomen along with narrowing the waistline.

Finally, during a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) the excess skin and fat will be removed and the incisions carefully closed.  The belly button will then be pulled through and refreshed.

What is the Recovery After Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

Initial healing from a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) will include swelling and discomfort at the incision sites.  Discomfort is common and can be controlled with medication and a pain pump. You will be instructed to return to light walking as soon as possible to minimize the potential for blood clots and other complications.  You must avoid bending, straining or lifting anything for several days. Your plastic surgeon may also instruct you not to stand fully upright, to avoid stressing any internal sutures as they heal, and to sleep with pillows under your knees. To assure a successful outcome of your tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), it is important that you follow all instructions carefully. A return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready, usually within a few days of surgery. Initial wound healing may take 5 to 10 days. Any sutures will be removed some time after that, if necessary. You will be ready to return to work and normal activity in a few weeks, so long as you do not engage in any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.

When will I see the Results After Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

The results of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) are visible almost immediately after surgery.  However, it does take several months for your final result. Numbness and firmness over the skin surface will resolve over the following months. It may take a year or more for the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) incision lines to fade. Although they are permanent, these incision scars are easily hidden by most clothing and swimsuits.

Can a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) be Performed with Other Procedures?

It is possible to have a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) done with other procedures. One of the most common combined procedures is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) combined with correction of the breast. It is commonly called a "mommy makeover".  Pregnancies will distort both the breasts and the abdomen . The advantage of combining the procedures is that it allows for one recovery time, thus, missing less time off work or time away from your family. While the abdomen is healing so is the breast.

The patient underwent a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) along with a breast augmentation and breast lift.  The patient also maintained good exercise program and healthy diet.  The patient has obtained a wonderful result from her "mommy makeover" surgery.

What Happens to the Belly Button After Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Procedure?

During a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the belly button becomes refreshed.  The excess skin surrounding the belly button will be smoothed out.  Any small hernias from previous pregnancies can be repaired during a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).  In addition, the belly button will remain in the same location with the base of the belly button maintaining the same convolution and twist.
